INDIANAPOLIS, April 17, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- A study released today by the Indiana University School of Pharmacy and the Indianapolis City University Medical Center (ICMC) shows that the ADHD drug Ritalin has significant long-term safety and efficacy for treating adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The study also found that Ritalin is associated with an increased risk of suicidal behavior in adolescents and adults who take this medication. The FDA is reviewing the study.

The findings from the study were published today in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The study is an open-label, randomized, controlled, parallel-group trial of Ritalin as a treatment for adults with ADHD treated with an ADHD Medication.

"The findings from the study indicate that Ritalin is associated with an increased risk of suicidal behavior in adolescents and adults with ADHD," said David E. Klee, M. D., M. P. H., chief of pediatric medicine for ICMC. "The study is an important step in the FDA’s efforts to address the growing problem of pediatric ADHD in children. We hope that this study will inform the FDA and other health care providers to properly address this important issue and address other safety concerns for patients with ADHD treated with Ritalin."

The study was conducted by the ICMC in an effort to establish the effectiveness and safety of Ritalin for the treatment of adult ADHD. In addition, the ICMC and ICMC's team conducted a comprehensive review of Ritalin's efficacy, safety, and tolerability for adult ADHD. This was a multidisciplinary research project involving 24,000 pediatric patients and 20,000 adults.

The study was approved by the FDA in June 2008 and is part of a larger study of Ritalin for the treatment of adult ADHD. The study is funded by the National Institutes of Health under grants AI031584-01-01, AI0209332-01-02 and AI0209306-01-04.

The study was performed in compliance with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) (see also Section 4.5.3 of the Manual).

About ADHD

ADHD is a condition that involves a person's ability to notice changes in activity, thoughts, and behaviors. This can cause symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, and irritability, or may cause anxiety, depression, and mood swings. The symptoms can be categorized into several categories, each with its unique pattern of occurrence.

Children with ADHD may also be susceptible to other neurological problems such as tics, anxiety, and mood swings. The symptoms can include a lack of attention, poor concentration, irritability, impulsivity, and restlessness. Some individuals with ADHD may also have thoughts of suicide or self-harm. Other symptoms of ADHD include impulsivity, hyperactivity, and irritability.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, or a group of mental disorders. It causes changes in the body, including changes in behavior and energy levels. It affects more than 1 in 10 adults and is characterized by extreme distress and impulsivity, as well as in children and adolescents. Children with ADHD may also have a heightened risk of suicide, and the risk appears to be higher for those with the disorder at a higher risk.

ADHD is treated with medications that increase the levels of certain chemicals in the brain. These medications work by increasing levels of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin, which play a critical role in controlling behavior. These medications are usually prescribed in conjunction with therapy. The medications used in ADHD treatment include medications such as methylphenidate (Ritalin), dronedarone (Concerta), and atomoxetine (Strattera).

The drug Ritalin is available in the United States and Canada. In addition, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the drug for pediatric use. Ritalin is approved for children 12 years of age and older with ADHD who are on a manic or depressive episode of their illness. Ritalin is also approved for children and adolescents 12 years of age and older with ADHD who have failed or become more depressed or agitated.
